Barbel. As an angler, I’m all too aware of those rare moments while fishing that make the heart skip a beat, be it the trout taking the fly, the salmon leaping the fall, the carp tail waving in the margin of a shallow lake or simply the sight of a shoal of roach under a bridge. In this drawing I have tried to capture that moment when the dappled shape of a barbel is first sighted on a golden gravel run in a shallow, fast flowing river.
